Spring is just a fun time of the year, everything outdoors is going through different transformations, flowers are blooming, trees are turning green and the bugs are coming out. This is a great time to incorporate nature into your classroom or at home. I decided to do a butterfly mini study with my daughter. A big part of this study consisted in a live caterpillar to butterflies science kit to experience hands on how caterpillars turn into butterflies. And let me tell you this was an amazing activity for both my daughter and I!

Caterpillars to Butterflies Science Kit

Day 1

Our kit has arrived! We are so excited to watch these caterpillars grow and turn into butterflies! We received 6 tiny caterpillars! They weren’t moving to much when I first opened the box but as the day went on they started moving.

Day 2

They have started moving around more and eating more!

Day 3

The caterpillars have almost doubled in size from when we got them. They are moving around like crazy.

Day 4

Today was about the same as yesterday. They are continuing to grow.

Day 5

I was really worried about three of the caterpillars today. They stayed on the lid and did not move all day. Hopefully they move tomorrow.

Day 6

It is crazy how much the have grown in 6 days! The two I was worried about have moved so they are alright!

Day 7

They are eating away and growing even more. Just a few more days before they build their chrysalis.

Day 8

Caterpillars are still eating away. They did a lot of moving around today!

Day 9

All the caterpillars are on the top. Most are in the J position for them to start turning into the chrysalis!

Day 10

We have four that have started the process of turning into chrysalis. One is in the J position and 1 caterpillar is still hanging up near the top.

Day 11

We have 6 in the process of turning into the chrysalis and the last one is in the J position!

Day 12

We now have 6 chrysalis! Now time to wait for the butterflies!

Day 13

This will be the last day with the chrysalis in the cup! Tomorrow I will be taking the lid off and putting in the the lid stand. The chrysalis have continued to harden.

Day 14

Today I took the lid off so the chrysalis could hang better as we get ready for the butterflies! The two chrysalis in the cup seem to be doing alright the food around them has really started to dissolve.

Day 15

Chrysalis are doing great as the continue the process of changing into the butterflies. The two in the bottom of the cup seem to be doing ok and the food continues dissolve.

Day 19

Late last night out first butterfly hatched from the dark chrysalis! We have two more chrysalis that are dark black. Hopefully today those two hatch!

Day 20

We had one more hatch yesterday and today one more has hatched today!

Day 21

We are up to four butteries that have hatched! They are doing great! Moving their wings a lot and practicing flying.

Day 22

One more butterflies have hatched! We have one more chrysalis we are waiting for!

Day 23

We fed the butterflies a tiny slice of orange today! They started eating it right away. The one last chrysalis has not hatched. I’m starting to think it was a weakling and is not going to hatch.

Day 24

The butterflies did a lot of flying around and moving their wings today. I think we will release them tomorrow!

Day 25

After 3 days of watching the butterflies practice flying and eating we decided to release them. The chrysalis that never hatched we placed in our garden. We had one butterfly that flew off immediately. The other ones needed some assistance. The landed on Avalynn then the grass then took off. One hung around for a while climbing on Avalynns hands. She was so excited to hold a butterfly. We will be doing this again next year.
