ECE Teaching social studies

Teaching social studies in an ECE setting can be quite confusing. This is one topic I have always struggled to teach. Recently, I had the opportunity to take ChildCare Education Institute’s professional development online course CUR114: 21st Century Social Studies in Early Childhood Education. This course helped me to feel more secure while teaching social studies to ECE students. I learned some extremely relevant and important information that I will definitely be using in the future.

More about CUR114: 21st Century Social Studies in Early Childhood Education

CUR114: 21st Century Social Studies in Early Childhood Education provided me with amazing information that will help me to teach social studies to ECE children. I have found it very difficult to find courses similar to this so I am very thankful that CCEI provides this online course. If you’re looking for an online provider then I highly recommend you try ChildCare Education Institute’s online course selection.

A Few Course Objectives

  • Demonstrate and understand the 10 themes of social studies
  • Identify the primary purpose of social studies
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the meaning and purpose of compelling questions in the context of social studies
  • Identify connections between the social studies curriculum and the development of social emotional skills.

Things I Learned

Did you know that children start learning social studies at birth? Far before children can start reading, writing, even talking they are trying to figure out the world around them. This is part of social studies for ECE children. Children are naturally curious about the world around them. Social Studies helps children develop the skills and knowledge they need in order to answer their own questions and discover new ones!

Some key pieces of information this course include:

  • Ten Themes of Social Studies they cover:
    • Culture
    • Time, Continuity, Change
    • People, Places, Environments
    • Individual Development and Identity
    • Individuals, Groups, Institutions
    • Power, Authority, Governance
    • Production, Distribution, Consumption
    • Science, Technology, Society
    • Global Connections
    • Civic Ideas and Practices

When teaching social studies it does not only refer to the history and culture of different countries, it also refers to teaching the children about themselves, family and community.

This course provided me with some amazing tips and ideas that I can use in the classroom to help teach children. I recently completed ChildCare Education Institute’s course CUR114: 21st Century Social Studies in Early Childhood Education and loved it! I learned new ways to implement social studies into my teaching method. ChildCare Education Institute is the perfect online provider because they offer courses designed for the teacher and student in mind.

Course Navigation and Review

I absolutely love the way that ChildCare Education Institute delivers the course information. Their online courses are very user-friendly to navigate through and the terminology and data is provided in such a way where you can quickly understand the information. I found that CCEI’s learning management system is very accessible and easy to use compared to other professional development courses I’ve taken in the past.

21st Century Social Studies in Early Childhood Education is a 3-hour course that consists of reading material, videos, simple assessment questions and a final exam. While taking this course you will be presented with different slides that keeps the material short and sweet and easier to take in the information easily.

Most importantly they provided you with examples of how to teach your children. These examples include activities to do, things to say and questions to ask while in the classroom. So not only are they providing you information and the educational background you need to succeed, they are also providing you with tips on exactly what you can do to teach your children!

Assessment

The assessment questions during the course are related directly to the material they just presented you. If you answered the question wrong, you are prompted to go back and read the material over and try again. I found this super helpful as I have always struggled with assessments.

The final assessment consists of 11 questions and you have to score at least a 70% to pass. Don’t worry if you don’t pass the first time, you can retake the assessment up to 10 times!  If you did not pass you can go back and review the content again and retake the exam. I just love this idea! ChildCare Education Institute is really making it where you can be successful!

Once you pass the final exam you will receive a digital certificate of completion. Not only is this certificate for your personal use but you can use this certificate for state required in-service training hours and/or your center’s training requirements.

This was the second course I completed with CCEI and it is by far the most informative and easiest professional development course I have ever taken. Check out my last review of CUR115: Mathematical Talk and Play on my blog. CCEI’s courses provide you with extremely relevant information that I can implement into my teaching strategies throughout my career. Try ChildCare Education Institute today and you will see for yourself!

My Experience

I cannot say enough positive things about my wonderful experience with ChildCare Education Institute. The entire process from registering and signing up for courses to completing the course has beyond exceeded my expectations. Best part is, I can take these courses from the comfort of my home, which means no more taking time off work to travel for training only to learn that the information is not relevant for your current position. That’s what I love about CCEI is you don’t have to go to a classroom to enhance your professional development. ChildCare Education Institute has taken professional development coursework to the next level and I highly recommend their online courses to all ECE professionals!

  • No more traveling to take your courses
  • Cheaper courses then traveling, and taking off work for a seminar

What Is ChildCare Education Institute

Not only does CCEI provide high-quality, online training courses and programs (over 150 in English and Spanish) but they also provide a free trial course! Other online providers can be extremely expensive and don’t offer free trials. I love that CCEI lets teachers try out one of their courses for free at the beginning! Teachers really appreciate the little things in life — especially the word FREE. Not to mention, CCEI has had over 5 million online course hours completed by CCEI students which means teachers love taking these courses. I’m a numbers gal, so knowing CCEI has 5 million course hours completed means they have a loyal audience.

Benefits offered by CCEI

CCEI offers so many benefits that other online providers don’t. I love that they are accredited by the industry’s leading associations including the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC), International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET), Council for Professional Recognition, National Workforce Registry Alliance (NWRA), National Afterschool Association (NAA) and more.

Did you know ChildCare Education Institute is the only training provider who offers an extensive Activities Library with over 10,000 activities as part of your annual center-based training subscription? You can use these ideas in the classroom. It’s so hard to constantly come up with new and innovative ways to teach your students so that it is effective. With CCEI’s Activities Library feature, there’s no way I’ll run out of ideas.

Also, other online providers don’t have as near of well-rounded a course selection as CCEI. They offer courses that are spiritually based, courses on safety in the classroom, teaching children with special needs and much more. I’ve listed some sample courses below that I’m interested in trying. I can’t wait to try some others on the list! Here are some that looked interesting:

Sample Classes from ChildCare Education Institute

  • Brain Development and the Effects of Early Deprivation
  • Building a Team Environment
  • Bright Beginnings: Age Appropriate Activities for Infants and Toddlers
