Water beads are one of my daughters favorite activity supplies! I mean they are actually one of the coolest things and can be used in so many different ways! These beads are just amazing and they are a fantastic sensory play for children of all ages! We played with these frozen water beads today and man they kept Avalunn busy for hours! Even after they thawed all out Avalynn was still having fun!

These tiny beads start out super small and hared you put them in a bowl of water for about 8 hours they grow to soft water filled balls that children love playing with!

Materials

  • Water Beads
  • Water
  • Freezer
  • Large container to put beads in for play
  • Fine motor toys (we used tweezers, squirt bottle, scooping scissors, bowls, toy hammer, and measuring cups)

Now before you start as a safety measure make sure your child is safe to play with these. Toddlers that put everything in their mouth may not be good with these.

Getting Started

Use as many as you want, the less you use the faster they will freeze. We choose to do a lot and they took a while to freeze and they froze together so we had huge blocks of them!

First, we grew our beads. This part is so much fun and my little one loves checking on them to see how big they are. After they are to the desired sized They are ready to freeze. I used  slotted spoon to scoop them into plastic containers. Then put them in the freezer and the waiting game started.

We put our beads in over night due to how many we made. If you don’t make to many you may only have to wait an hour or so. Avalynn was so excited to see how these beads changed.

I put all the frozen beads in a large container so there would be plenty of room to play with them. We had so much fun rolling them, hitting them with the hammer, squirting water on them and so much more!

The cold sensory bin this created was perfect for a warm summer day. I do have to say though that a lot of the beads did not hold up good being froze. They were braking and tuning into mush after a while. Normally I dry water beads out to reuse them but this time I was not able to. If you like to re use your beads make this one of your last activities you do with them. Thankfully it does not take to many beads to make a water bead sensory bin!

Not only was this activity a big hit with my little one it was also a great fine motor and sensory activity!!
