10 Baby Items that you dont need

When your pregnant it is so easy to get over whelmed with everything that you need to do and get to prepare for your baby.

When I was pregnant I went crazy and caught so much stuff. Her first year of life she pretty much only wore every outfit once. She had a good 30 headbands/bows and a ton of shoes. I made sure she had super nice things that she had all the cool items. Let’s just say that I really went over board buying things for her. A lot of the things I bought later I realized that they really were not necessary. Whether  your having a baby on a tight budget or not there are items that you really don’t need to buy.

1. Diaper Genie

Diaper genies can seem like a great idea but just think about. Do you really want a week worth of diapers sitting in your house. It doesn’t matter if you put the oder eliminator in it or not. Once your child starts eating solid foods those diapers are going to stink horribly!

I recommend getting a small trash can with a lid and a foot pedal so you can still open it when your hands are full.

2. Changing table

Changing tables are useful in restaurants and stores but in your house not so much. It will probably end up being a shelf to stack things on instead of a place to change your child. It is so much easier to have a changing mat and just put them on the couch and change them.

3. Wipe heater

As long as your wipes are in your house and not left in the car over night having a wipe warmer is not worth it. Your house stays warm enough for your little one those wipes are going to be just fine.

4. Nursing pillow

If your going to nurse your little one don’t get talked into buying a nursing pillow. I had one with my daughter and it was so uncomfortable and didn’t even help. I found it easier to just hold her and put a pillow under my arm. You could always just use a normal pillow to support you baby during feeding time if you felt you need it.

5. Fancy clothes

Now I am not saying that you shouldn’t buy nice clothes for your baby but just watch the amount you buy and how much your really spending on what you buy. Babies out grow their clothes so fast it’s not worth spending a bunch of money on super fancy clothes that they will only wear a couple of times before it no longer fits them.

6. Shoes

I was the mom that wanted my child to have shoes on when ever we left the house so she would be use to wearing shoes. In reality that did not work its a battle to get her to keep her shoes on now. When they are little don’t bother buying shoes just put socks on them and they are good. Once they start walking then that’s when you can buy them those cute shoes.

7. Fancy baby bath

There are so many options for baby baths out there. They are so tempting to buy but stop your self before you do. We only used our baby bath a handful of times and it was just bulky and awkward. Having one is nice but don’t spend a ton on them. They make really neat cushions for the kitchen sink/bath tub that works really good for babies or even little bath seats that work perfect. Once they are sitting up on their own they can then go into the normal bath tub.

8. Bassinet

Bassinet are a neat idea if you’re wanting baby in your room but not co sleeping with them. Its nice during those sleepless nights having baby in arms reach but bassinets don’t last very long. Once your little one can roll over or reach around 15 pounds you are supposed to quit using bassinets. For me my daughter would not even sleep in a bassinet. I would recommend either using a play pen which most come with a bassinet attachment  or using a rock and play. The play pen will last for a couple of years and it is very easy to take places with you. The rock and plays are nice and small and will also fold up to take with but it will only last for a little while before your little one outgrows it.

9. Bottle Sterilizer

Baby bottles can be cleaned in the dish washer or hand washed which ever you prefer. Having to wash your bottle then put them in a sterilizer is not worth it. If washed in the dishwasher the are cleaned and heat dried which is cleaning them good any way. Even with being hand washed the bottles are getting cleaned.  No need to take that extra step to sterilize the bottles.

10. Tons of toys

Babies do not need to have a bunch of different toys when they are little. Once they hit one is when they will become interested in playing. having a few rattles or stuffed animals will be good. Don’t stress on making sure they have all the top-notch new toys.

  1. I agree with almost all of these! The only items on your list that I had were the nursing pillow and the diaper genie. The Brest Friend pillow was a must-have for my first baby, but then I never touched it again for babies #2 and #3. The diaper genie still gets used daily. (although I agree, it’s gross!). Completely agree on the other items!

    1. I could see how the Brest friend nursing pillow was helpful I have had many friends use it and really like it. I also had a diaper genie also and did use it quite regularly they are just very gross haha I now use a trash can with the kids I babysit and like it much better!

  2. I agree with every single item on this list! Never used any of it! haha so glad we opted to bypass a lot of the typical baby items people insist are needed.
