Nursing Cover

Having a nursing cover allows you to nurse your bundle of joy while providing you the privacy you want. I had one with my daughter and I loved the idea that I could nurse in public and be able to have something that I could use to cover me.

DIY

Materials

1 yard of fabric

Matching thread

Boning

Interfacing

D- Rings

You will also need this equipment

Sewing Machine

Iron and Ironing board

Scissors or rotary cutter

Safety Pin

Pins

Lets Start!

Start by pre-washing your fabric then cutting it into the dimensions listed below.

Fabric three pieces total

26″X 38″ for the cover

30″X 3″ for the long strap

10″ X 3″ for the short strap

Interfacing

30″ X 3″ for the long strap

10″ X 3″ for the short strap

Boning

13.5″ for the neck opening

Now that your fabric is cut and ready lets start sewing and putting it all together!

Straps

Lay your fabric for your straps face down. You will now lay the interfacing on top on the fabric. (Make sure the it is on the wrong side of your fabric.)

Take the strap pieces and fold them in half (long sides together and right sides of fabric together)

Sew the edges together with a 1/4″ seem

Use a safety-pin to turn the straps inside out (this can be kinda tricky be patient and don’t get to frustrated with it)

Feed the safety-pin through the strap

Once they are turned right side out iron them flat with the seem in the middle of the strap

Take one side of both the straps and fold it over 1/4″ inch and iron

With the shorter strap, grab your d-rings and fold the fabric over the d-rings and pin

Sew in place using a strong stick.  (This area will have a lot of tension on it and it needs to stay strong)

Now take the larger strap and fold over the edge and sew

Your straps are now complete!

Cover

You will now be working with the piece for the cover. Lay it right side down. Working with the bottom edge fold it over 1/2″ and iron the fold another 1/2″

Sew in place with a straight stitch

Now for the perpendicular sides you will do the same

The top is a little different. fold it over 1/2″ and iron then another 1″ and iron.

Fold the cover in half and measure 7 inches from the center of the cover. Mark this with a pin on both sides of the cover. Unfold the cover and sew a straight stitch in between the two pins. make sure this stitch is towards the bottom of the fold. You will be inserting the boning in next.

After sewing the straight stitch grab your boning and insert it. I like to use a 13.5″ boning instead of the full 14 the your opening is because the boning likes to try coming through your fabric if it is too long.

Once the boning is all the way in sew perpendicular to the straight stitch to enclose the boning in.

The cover part is now complete lets just add the straps and it will be all done

Attaching the straps

Take your shorter strap on the left side of the cover insert the strap under the hem and next to the seem for the boning. Make sure the seem for the strap is facing down.

Fold the strap up iron and pin in place

Repeat with the long strap on the right side of the cover

Sew straps in place with a box. This will give the straps some extra strength

For the remainder of the hem sew in place with a straight stitch

Complete

You did it! Good job you created your very own nursing cover!
