ChildCare Education Institute has high-quality online professional development courses and certification programs for early childhood education professionals. This post includes my honest review on their course CUR115: Mathematical Talk and Play.
As a childcare provider, early education teacher, or even homeschooling your little ones at home, it is important to educate yourself with useful professional development classes. Working ten years in the child care field, I know how difficult and expensive it can be taking professional development courses for early childhood education. You have the traveling cost, hotel fees, seminar expenses and you have to take time off from work not to mention any childcare costs for your own little ones. It can all add up and make it not worth doing. ChildCare Education Institute offers relevant and incredible professional development classes that you can complete in the comfort of your home and on your own time!

My Experience
I cannot say enough positive things about my wonderful experience with ChildCare Education Institute. The entire process from registering to signing up for courses and going through my coursework has beyond exceeded my expectations. Throughout the CUR115: Mathematical Talk and Play online course, I found it very easy to navigate through each slide. The course also provided me with amazing and relevant information that I know I will use throughout my career. Best part is, I can take these courses from the comfort of my home, which means no more taking time off work to travel for training only to learn that the information is not relevant for your current position.

CUR115: Mathematical Talk and Play
The course CUR115: Mathematical Talk and Play taught me some extremely valuable information that I can use in the classroom or at home with my little one. Some key pieces of information this course has taught me include:
- Identifying the benefits of early math skills
- Identifying characteristics of high-quality math instruction
- Recognizing ways to use mathematical talk to build math competency
- Defining free play, play-based learning, and purposeful play
- Identifying characteristics of five counting principles: one-to-one correspondence, stable order, cardinality, abstraction, and order irrelevance
- Identifying how to use mathematical talk and play to support the development of rational counting in young children
Course Navigation and Review
I love the way this class has taught me simple ways I can teach math to my students. One of the ways that you can teach kids math that sticks out to me the most is you can teach math at any time during the day. Snack time, have your children sort their snack. Play time, have your children count their toys. Circle time, have your children find different shapes throughout the room.
The 2-hour course consisted of reading material, videos, simple assessment questions then a final exam. In each slide of the course you are given a paragraph of information. You read the information, then click the continue button. This helped to keep the material short and sweet and easier to take in the information a little at a time.
The assessment questions during the course are related directly with the material they just presented you. If you answered the question wrong, you were prompted to go back and read the material over and try again. I found this super helpful as I have always struggled with assessments. The final exam was the same way. The test is a total of 11 questions and you have to score at least a 70% to pass. You could take the test up to 10 times to pass. If you did not pass you could review the content again and retake the exam.
At the end of the course you will receive a digital certificate of completion you can use for state required in-service training hours and/or your center’s training requirements. This is by far the most informative and easiest professional development course I have ever taken. I will be using CCEI again!
