This St Patrick’s Day fizzing science activity is a great activity to do with your little leprechaun’s! We love doing fizzing science activities and do them often. Not only are these fizzing science activities fun but they are also inexpensive and simple to set up!
Lets jump right in
This activity is super simple to set up. You will need a couple supplies and about 15-30 minutes to complete the activity! This activity asks the question what happens when you add an acid to a base? Remember to ask your children what they think will happen and talk about the reaction you guys watch.
Materials
- Little black pot, or leprechaun hat if you want to do rainbow colors use 6 if not you can use 1
- Baking soda
- White Vinegar
- Food Coloring (optional)
- Gold Glitter (optional)
- Tray or container
Fizzing Science Activity
Start by setting out your tray and putting your black pots on it. Add a couple drops of food coloring to each pot.
Add some baking soda to each pot. If you’re adding glitter add some now.
Have your child sit back and poor the vinegar into the pots. Watch what happens!
Tips*
Have some extra baking soda and vinegar so that you can do the experiment over again. From my experience fizzing science activities are a huge hit so the kids will be begging for more.
Experiment with different acids such as lemon juice or lime juice. It will not create the same reaction as vinegar but its fun to try different acids as a way of experimenting.
Questions to ask
Before
What do you think will happen to the baking soda when you add the vinegar?
During
What do you see, smell and hear?
What is happening?
After
Where do you think the bubbles came from?
What happened to the baking soda and vinegar.
Science behind fizzing pots
The science behind these fizzing pots is simply a chemical reaction. You have your baking soda which is the base and the vinegar which is the acid. When you mix these two together it creates a gas called carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide that is created causes the bubbles and fizzing to occur.
