I love fall time for the beautiful colors and nice weather. This fall harvest sensory bin is a great way to demonstrate fall time with your children. This is a great activity for those older toddlers and preschoolers and a big positive with this activity is its cheap and simple to set up. I do not recommend this sensory bin for children under 3 as it contains materials that could be a choking hazard.
Materials
- Popcorn kernels
- Fake leaves (This is a great set to have extra for other fall projects)
- Measuring cups
- Funnels
- Bowls
Fall Harvest Sensory Bin
We have used colored rice, packaging peanuts, sand and more for sensory bins but this was the first time with popcorn kernels so my little one was so excited to play with it. I added some measuring cups funnels, bowls and tongs to this sensory play. This is a great activity to build those fine motor skills.
Avalynn really enjoyed scooping and pouring the kernels. She would fill the bowl with the kernels and leaves and say she was making leaf popcorn.
Not only is this a great fine motor activity this can also be used as a math activity. While scooping and pouring the kernels your child is learning about measuring, amounts and volume. They are learning how many scoops it takes to fill the bowl or how big of a scoop to take to fill the measuring cup.
Fall harvest sensory was a huge hit with my little one! Even though this may be a very simple activity it will last for hours if not days. I normally keep my sensory bins out for a week at a time before I switch it to something new.
